2BP: Pacific City to Newport

February 28, 2016

Sunday.

My mother had been recovering nicely and would continue to do so.  The list of potential visitors for the day was overflowing.  Pongo had been stuck in a crate for the better part of two days with four more days of crate time looming for the work week.  I was getting itchy feet.

Grand Ronde, OR
Oregon Route 130
I was thinking of going to Mount Hood.  Pongo enjoys snow and we'd never been there.  The weather knocked it off my list, though.  It was raining all over Oregon, meaning it would be snowing at higher elevations.  I like going to the snow but driving while it's snowing is not something I enjoy.  So, we headed to the coast instead.  The nice part of this plan is that I know how long it takes to get from just about any point on the Oregon coast to Salem.  I'd be able to ensure we'd get back in time for me to spend a few hours in the hospital with my mother.

Little Nestucca River, OR
On my last trip to Oregon during Thanksgiving, my dad and I tried to drive down the coast from Tillamook to Newport.  We only made it to Pacific City.  Pongo and I agreed to try to complete that trip.

Haystack Rock, Pacific City, OR
The Pacific City beach is one of the more spectacular beaches on the Oregon coast.  There are three haystacks know as Haystack Rock on the Oregon coast.  One is near Coos Bay, another is at Cannon Beach and the last--my personal favorite--is at Pacific City.  There's a connection to my mother here.  She's an author.  In her first book, Haystack Rock was a central symbol.  I'm not sure which Haystack Rock it was.  I'll have to ask her when I call her tomorrow.

Pacific City, OR
Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area
According to Wikipedia, the Haystack Rock in Pacific City is also known as Chief Kiwanda Rock.  Huh.  I had no idea.  Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area is adjacent to the Pacific City beach.  It has cliffs and tide pools and a big dune that kids love to climb.  My brother tells me we used to like to climb the dune and run down it when we were kids.  I have no recollection of that.  There's nothing unusual about that.  He's got a sharp memory.  Mine's a bit dull.  Funny, those facts work both for and against both of us.

Two people died falling from those Cape Kiwanda cliffs last month.  Sad.  Yosemite has the same problem with its cliffs.

Stay away from cliffs.

That's my public service announcement for the day.

Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge, OR
Canada Goose
Our next stop was at Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge.  It's a beautiful refuge along Highway 101.  I've seen a few bald eagles there.  No eagles on this trip, unfortunately.  We saw a lot of dusky Canada geese, though.  Canada geese aren't the most exciting birds to spot, but I still enjoying seeing them in the wild.  I like how geese are distributed along the West coast with Canada geese in the North and now and Ross' geese in California.  We get a few Canada geese in California as well.

I don't suspect most people n Oregon have considered how Otter Crest got its name.  Sea otters used to be plentiful along the Oregon coast.  They are all gone now.  They were hunted to extirpation.  The last Oregon sea otter died over one hundred years ago.  They may be making a comeback.  A lone otter was spotted in Depoe Bay (a few miles from Otter Crest) in 2009, but as of yet a permanent population has yet to return,  We can only hope.

When we reached Newport, Pongo and I headed down to the waterfront.  I didn't really have a plan.  I was thinking about grabbing some chowder at Mo's, but the sun was out so I didn't want to leave Pongo in the car.  as we drove we heard the barking of sea lions so I found a place to park and we got out to take a look. Holy cow!  What a show these beasts put on!

Pongo used to be frightened by the noise sea lions make.  He begged to go back into the car on one of our first trips when we encountered a large number offshore in the Seventeen Mile Drive in California.  He's come a long way.  On this trip he poked his head through the fence railings to get a better look.  They were close and they were loud but he just grinned and wagged his tail.

Out on the South Jetty in Newport we saw a wide variety of birds including a number of harlequin ducks.  Boy, they are beautiful.

We headed back to Salem after the stop at the jetty.  We had plenty of time to get back and for Pongo to have dinner before I went to the hospital.  I sat with my mother and showed her the pictures from the day.  She seemed to enjoy them.  She says she enjoys my photography.  I'm never sure if she really means it or if she just says that because she's my mom.  One of the things I am sure of, though, is she understand my need to be alone.  She's the same way, although she handles people better than I do.

2BP: Keizer Rapids Park

February 27, 2016

I spent the best part of the day on Saturday at the hospital.  I made a point of taking Pongo out for a couple of hours, though.  We went to Keizer Rapids.  This another Salem-area park right on the Willamette.  This one is a couple of miles or so downstream from Minto-Brown Island Park.  It's actually in the city of Keizer, which used to be a part of Salem but split off into its own township when I was a kid.

Pongo -- Keizer Rapids Park, Keizer, OR
Keizer Rapids has a nice fenced-in dog park.  Hooray!  Pongo was able to walk off leash and spend some time with some other dogs.  I was even able to get a decent photo of him.

After the dog park, we went for a stroll on one of the river trails at the park.  It was a nice walk through a forest area that opened up onto a flood plain.  We didn't spend a lot of time there, but it was nice to get out into the open even if it was only for a couple of hours.

2BP: Minto-Brown Island Park

February 26, 2016

Friday was the day of my mother's surgery.  Obviously, it was a very stressful day.  The surgery couldn't have gone better according to the doctors.  I'll skip ahead a little bit and say that she's back at home and recovering quite well.  As far as I know there hasn't been a hitch along the way.

Salem Health, Salem, OR
Outside the surgery room, my siblings and father and I had yet to find our rhythm.  It improved as the week went on, but the whole who-was-going-to-be-where-and-when thing could have been better.  Partially, we weren't prepared for the emotional impact and we didn't have a cohesive plan of attack.  We didn't have any big problems, but at some point each one of us got stepped on a little bit as we all tried to cope with the situation.  I learned a few lessons.  I suspect we all did.

Minto-Brown Island Park, Salem, OR
Doesn't that look like a place where a dead body would be found on an episode of X-Files?  It's a swampy area where I took Pongo for a walk in Minto-Brown Island Park while my mother slept off the anesthesia.  We didn't stumble on any dead bodies or an alien enclave on this particular excursion.  The city is doing some big renovations to the park and my brother told me two bodies actually were found by workers.  Obviously, right?

Minto-Brown Island Park
There are a lot of beavers in this area.  There's a dam and a lodge at the head of this swamp.  A few years ago my brother took us canoeing back into this area and we saw or heard eight to ten individuals.  I was hoping for a glimpse or a photo but that didn't pan out.  I'm bringing my kayak on my next trip up, though.

Pongo
Minto-Brown Island used to be an actual island on the Willamette.  This is an area where the river is doing a lot of shifting around.  The island is no longer an island.  Historically, the Willamette has wandered all over this great valley.  It's the reason the land in the Willamette Valley is so fertile.  We've boxed the river in here and there, but I've seen some minor and not so minor changes to its course in the Salem area over my lifetime.  I'd love to come back in a thousand years to see what this area looks like.

2BP: Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge and Mount Shasta

February 25, 2016

A made an unexpected road trip last week.  I got a phone call from my dad about ten days ago.  Mom was in the hospital for heart surgery.  It was Wednesday night.  Surgery would be on Friday.

That's not the kind of phone call you want to get.

Marsh Wren -- Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, CA
Black-tailed Jackrabbit
I decided to drive up Thursday and stay until Mom got settled back at home for recovery.  The foster dog situation was a little crazy at my home (my wife runs a dog rescue organization) so she asked me to take Pongo along.  No problem there, He's a good travelling companion and I could use the company.  Plus, I wasn't planning on doing much adventuring but it gave me a reason to at least get out and do short versions of the dog-friendly variety since he'd be spending a good chunk of his time in a crate.

Black-tailed Jackrabbit -- Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, CA
Stopping at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge has become pretty standard for us when driving up Interstate 5 in the colder months.  Pongo and I both enjoy the auto loop.  He hangs out the window and watches the birds and rabbits while I slowly drive and stop for pictures.  There are a couple of places where we can stop and stretch our legs and there are a few short trails for strolling.

Snow Goose -- Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, CA
Pacific Pond Turtle & Cinnamon Teal -- Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, CA
Red-shouldered Hawk -- Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, CA
Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best places I know for getting good hawk photos.  They often sit in the trees alongside the auto route and aren't spooked by cars.  It's almost too easy to get nice shots.

Another regular stop is near Weed, CA.  There's a rest stop there.  Near the rest stop are some train tracks, and from that spot near the train tracks is one of the best views of Mount Shasta that I know of.  I'm no expert, mind you.  I stop for photos there now on every drive up I-5.  The mountain has so many moods that I'm never bored with shooting from that same location.
