Road Trip 2016: Canyonlands National Park

October 1, 2016

On Saturday, we drove from Salt Lake City to Canyonlands National Park.  The campground was full when we got there, but we found a nice looking site at a BLM campground called Cowboy Camp a few miles outside of the park.  The site had a great view but it was a bit exposed.  We would pay for that exposure on our second night there.

After settling in, we drove to the Island in the Sky entrance of Canyonlands for an auto tour of that area of the park.  Holy moly, talk about stunning views.  It's easy to imagine that this is what the Grand Canyon might have looked like a million years ago.  The Colorado River is one of two rivers that run through the park and have carved out these canyons, so it's not surprising that this area shares a striking resemblance to the Northern Arizona landscape.

Canyonlands is cool because you van drive down into the canyon on unpaved roads.  Given the weather conditions, though, I wasn't even thinking about that.  If I had a four wheel drive I'd have certainly gone down.

We spent a lot of time in the car on Saturday, so before settling in for the night I took Pongo on walk in BLM land.  It was nice to get out and stretch our legs.  We could see Arches National Park in the distance.  That's where we'd spend most of our time on Sunday.

We were both pretty tired by the time we got back to our campsite.  I ate a can of ravioli.  Just the ravioli.  Not the can.  I don't think I've had that since I was a kid.  It wasn't bad, to be honest.  I've eaten far worse.  A thunderstorm rolled right by us.  It missed us by a couple of miles, I figure.  We wouldn't be so lucky on Sunday night.
